Windows 7 upgrade

Hey all.

Since I'm a student I can get windows 7 at stupid money off, so it makes sense to go for 'ultimate' as it's only a few quid more - couple of things

Presumably it's a bit heftier than 'home' or 'professional' - does it run as quickly?

And all over then net (this website is where I'm looking to order it from - http://www.software4students.co.uk/Microsoft_Windows_7_Ultimate_64_bit_Edition_Upgrade-details.aspx) there are these 'upgrade editions' - what's the deal with them?

From what I've seen in the shops, 32bit and 64bit versions come in the same box - is this correct or have I imagined it>? because on that website it seems you order one or the other...

Also, the previous version of windows I bought was XP SP1 about 7 years ago - is it eligible for these 'upgrade editions', even though I read that windows 7 requires a fresh install anyway...

Any information and experiences gratefully received

The Windows 7 RC was the Ultimate version. I had no problems running it and doing other things on my laptop, which is 3 years old. I would imagine you'd be able to get the upgrade. Does your little student discount thing have OEM copies for cheap as well? Those are pretty cheap as well, that's what I bought from newegg. I'd check Microsoft's website to make sure you'd be eligible for an upgrade.

that money is a good to go.
Like it. i was trying to be practical and bought the pro. Saving $20.00 for the Ultimate. Did i need it. no. Pro works fine for me. lots of features and another adventure. wanted some security though. i paid for windows 7 Pro $200.00.

I've just gone for pro as well - all I'd want over 'home' is the XP compatibility thingy anyway, for peace of mind more than anything. And it's 1/3 of the price I'd pay in the shops. If it ever arrives of course. The last thing I bought from a student software website took one month!
