Windows 8.1 will no longer be supported after May 13 2014

Actually not really... Why would Windows want to keep an outdated version of an OS supported when it is weaker in security than their current one? And since the update is free, why should they waste their time?

Update 1 is stable (actually better than without the update) and doesn't give you major changes on the OS so there is no reason to stay away from it.

Because that's just sooo simple for companies..

Maybe because lots of large corporations can't simply update every single PC immediately.

Exactly. That's even difficult for small companies. We have some 50 employees, and only two people in IT. It would take them awhile to go through every machine and make sure they were updated.

I know all corporations and businesses are different, but with us at our schools it's not as simple as running Windows Update and being done with it. If we have changes to make to our computers, we need to rebuild the image and re-image the clients with the updates. Typically we can only do this during downtimes which is over the summer, I can imagine it's even tougher in business environments.

.
True, I'll install the update, I'm still on the standard one.

Wow ALREADY?!!!
Windows 8 came out LAST YEAR rofl!!!
It's still a new OS and Microsoft will no longer support it without this update...wow...just wow Microsoft...

If a company has a lot of computers,it will be so damn time consuming for all of their computers to install this update on JUST TO HAVE the damn support from Microsoft...
And let's face it...there are a LOT of companies with a LOT of computers on the entire planet Earth lol...

The support for Windows XP was a LOT better and a LOT longer...and today...the support lasts 95% shorter...
What will be with Windows 9?
If you don't install ALL the updates AS SOON AS THEY COME OUT you will no longer have Microsoft support? :D

LMAO!

I just hope that will not happen, but looking at the way they are handling the support for Windows 8,it wouldn't surprise me...

I don't care about the Microsoft support AT ALL because I never needed the support from anyone, but many other people do...so bad for them I guess...

So yeah...like Troncoso said...that's dumb...and I agree...

Yeah I know for companies that would be a trouble but maybe the way companies update their system isn't a good one... I'm not a network manager so I won't go to far on this and won't even suggest another way of doing it.

All in all Travis summarized it well :)

Most companies that run servers have a Windows Update Server role that is responsible for pushing out updates. However unlike how most consumers just install all the updates, the server admin needs to go through and check if they need to install certain updates as to not cause issues with installed software or Windows installations on the end user machines. So that's time consuming and it takes a while.

What? Lol.

The fact that you felt the need to mention that your moms laptop runs XP and you just used it made it seem like you didn't know XP still worked.

Well they would have put that time checking each new security updates after that update 1 right?
