Windows 8: Disabling Metro

I've installed Windows 8 recently just for the sake of understanding Microsoft's new OS, considering they don't appear to be backing away from it. I've restored the Start Menu in Explorer so that I can avoid having to use Metro at all costs. One thing that I am concerned about at the moment is Windows 8's random incentive to switch over to Metro even when I don't click on anything. I've re-assigned all of my default programs, yet when I perform tasks, like going through pictures, or reading Facebook posts, Metro's built in software will randomly take over. Sometimes I could just have a bunch of windows up and as I scroll over to click on something, it will sporadically change to Metro. Does anyone know how I can completely disable or lock my computer from being able to switch from Desktop to Metro?

I really don't understand why you're so against Metro, to be honest. I had no problems with it when I used Windows 8.

People need to embrace the future, and right now the future is Windows 8 - and whether you like it or not, the Metro interface.

There isn't a way to disable it.

Not without destroying the operating system as a whole. I would agree to Windows 8 Metro being the future but unfortunately do to lack of sales that may end up not being to the case. If you go on CNN money Vista has still out sold Windows 8 in a month to month comparison and look at how long that lasted. I actually really like the LOOK of Vista.

there are plenty of ways to disable metro, several pc manufacturers are shipping pcs with the 3rd party tool installed to do so ;)

I have "Start 8" from Stardock. I don't see Metro in less I go into it myself. And I think the reason for Windows 8's selling problem is that Windows 7 is not that old and a lot of people that has 7 will not upgrade. Friend's of mine has 7 and they ask me if they should upgrade and I tell them if they can afford it, but otherwise not to worry about it. I only upgraded to 8 because I was coming from Windows XP Pro x64 and I tried out the (Release Preview) of 8 and liked it.

On my Win 8 machine, I don't have Metro disabled but it never pops up on it's own. Immediately after the machine boots, I click on the Desktop tile and never see Metro again unless I want to.

You said you reassigned all of your default programs which would have been my first guess. Is it possible there is a background process that calls a Metro app? Is there any chance you are accidentally hitting the Windows key?

Just download Pokki. It puts your start menu back and there is an option to boot straight to the desktop. That way you'll never have to use Metro.

I just started using Pokki, brilliant!

Oh wow, I just realized it gives you the option to disable hot corners. I'm loving this!
