ok so ive used windows 8 a little bit but im not greatly fond of it. im building a new pc and am wondering if i should pick up windows 7 and wait for 9 or just get 8? thanks for the help.

That's up to you. I personally will be staying with 7. 9 is still a ways in the distance. If you want a start menu with 8, you can always download Classic Shell.

End of sales for windows 7 comes in October of this year so get your copy before then if you plan on going windows 7. Release of windows 9 is expected by spring of next year.

8 and 7 provide a pretty similar experience. As stated above there are a few utilities to recreate your start menu. Since 8 is both not near EOS like 7 and has a longer window for support I'd probably just go with that.

Aside from raging at metro you likely wouldn't notice that large of a difference.

Uh, end of mainstream support for 7 is January 13, 2015, but extended support is January 14, 2020. It's gonna be the next XP.

I agree just get 8.1. The more you use it the more you will get used to it.

If you're interested in Windows 9 then I can tell you that it is probably going to be a lot closer to 8.1 in terms of user experience than 7 so using 8.1 would be 'good practice'.

I am using Windows 7 and I am staying with it. I would rather have a full desktop and start menu rather than stupid little colored squares.

You know you can actually boot directly to the desktop so you won't need those stupid little colored squares :)
