windows 8 wifi issues

I just got a Sony Vaio laptop with windows 8. I used the free virus protection that came on it until it expired. Now I am using Norton since it is provided by comcast. I am having issues connecting to my wifi. It says Limited or no connection almost every time I open the laptop. I can restart and get connected again usually. I even reset my modem and router and got connected fine. Right now I type this from the laptop only because I disabled the Norton Firewall. Could it be the Norton security causing my connection issues? I am able to use Wifi on my iphone fine so I know it is not my network. I tried troubleshooting it and got the message about an invalid ip. Any help is appreciated to get rid of this frustrating issue with my brand new pc. I tried some TCP/IP stack repair I found on a google search with no luck either. Thank you

I uninstalled norton last night and set up defender.internet was working last night. Wake up this morning and open the laptop and can't connect AGAIN! This is getting frustrating with a brand new comp.. Any other suggestions to get a stable connection to my wifi when opening the laptop to use it? The wifi signal is full and it says connected but when I open the browser in both Firefox and IE I get a "server not found".

I left the laptop open and reset the router and modem and now it's connected. But I typed all this and sent it on my iPhone on the WIFI before resetting it wtf?!? So basically the laptop is showing connected with a full signal but won't load up web pages... I have been able to get it to load web pages by either a router reset or restart of the computer... What can I do to avoid this every time?
Thank you!

When you hover over the connection icon does it say local only or does it says internet? I'm assuming its like the icon for windows 7. The only other possibility is it has a bad wireless driver and there are driver issues with windows 8. Look to see if there is an updated driver available for the wireless. May have to contact Sony and see if they are having issues with this model.

When I hover over it it says "unidentified network no Internet access". If I click it and view the wifi's in my area it shows neighbors wifi and mine and says connected beside mine..

wait...so it is connected to the neighbours wifi? Whatever it is connected to, try and Go to Network and Sharing Center in the explorer control panel (not the metro control panel), manage wireless netwt still dosnorks, delete everything on the list, then click add, manually create a network profile, and put in all of your network details. Select connect even if network is not broadcasting and start this connection automatically. If it asks you to connect to a more preferred network where available, decline it.

If it still doesn't work try running diagnose. (Go to network and sharing center, change adapter settings and right click and click properties on your wifi adapter). Click diagnose and if it doesn't fix it, just post what the results are.

Hope this helps :)

Not connected to neighbors. I can just see a few other networks as choices is what I was saying. I will try doing a complete new connection. Another site i am lookin at saying about the router lease might be expiring while the laptop hibernates.. Possibility? It was suggested to up the router lease time to max. This is kinda making sense considering today after a 20 min hibernates it connected when I opened it. But after about 2 hrs it wouldn't connect on a later attempt...

unless it has been changed, lease time is usually a couple of days (in my case it always has been). It should just renew anyway. You could try going into your router settings, digging around and seeing if you can find a lease time setting, or failing that, adding a static ip address of x.x.x.2 or whatever (where x.x.x.2 is whatever the rest of your ip address is, e.g 192.168.0.2) and then set the adapter to connect to it.

You may just have to fiddle with it. I can remember when XP was out, I spent hundreds of hours clicking things to try and make the connection to our router work. I was 8 at the time, which was quite challenging, but hey, I taught myself how to set up a home network and server in the process so it wasn't an entire loss.

There are issues with hibernating and losing wireless connection is one of them. Updating the wireless driver may help.

Also, make sure that all devices attached to the network are obtaining ip address automatically.

I think I fixed it. I went into network adapter settings then into power management. I unchecked the box that said about allowing powering down the adapter. I woke up those morning and the Internet worked! Thanks for the help and suggestions!

Ps, is it suggested to just use windows defender over downloading norton again?
