Windows 8 without Metro method?

Just a random thought... but if you have Windows 8...

If you get a copy of Windows 7's Explorer.exe, rename it to "explorer2.exe" and copy it to %systemroot% on Windows 8, then go to Regedit and locate:
Code: 
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Then with the Shell Key, alter it from "Explorer.exe" to "Explorer2.exe", and then reboot...

You should be able to run Windows 8 without the rubbish metro theme, as it will be running on Windows 7 shell, right?
 
I cant understand why people are doing this,Buying windows 8 then turning it back into Windows 7. :P

I know 8 has some improvements,but enough to buy it then make it look like windows 7 again? :P

lol I don't understand it much either. I think what most people want to get rid of is the Start screen though.
 
If you want Windows 7,use Windows 7.Don't spend money on Windows 8 to turn it into Windows 7 lol.
And if reason for buying Windows 8 is just because some things take 1 to 3 seconds shorter to load than they do on Windows 7 then GO AHEAD and spend your money on that.I surely will not.

Actually boot times have decreased by 15-20 seconds for me, and since I haven't upgraded my 2 GB of RAM the decreased RAM usage is awesome.
 
SSD or HDD? And that is impressive for windows. My desktop takes about 30 seconds to start with a Seagate 7200RPM drive (counting from BIOS splash screen). Love the near instant time of Linux on a SSD though. :)
 
I may have to give it a go, if it will do older games okay that is. Though I am not that much on boot times for the desktop.

Either way, didn't they remove the windows 7 look via registry settings in the RP version?

Mine is about 15 seconds give or take a few seconds on the vaio in my signature, it use to be 30 to 35 seconds with Windows 7.

Also the difference is Windows Defender only protects Windows 7 or Vista during use but if you get a virus or malware they just wait until you boot and corrupt in the boot and shut down defender where as Windows defender in Windows 8 secures from boot to regular use, not making Windows bullet proof but much improved security. Did some reading up on it when Windows 8 had me un-install MSE and found out that MS will not be providing a MSE for Windows 8 due to there confidence with the security with Windows 8.

I try my hardest to not use the original desktop and I think the only time I have is when I use a application that is not designed to run in metro. I like metro and I think it runs smoothly and knowing a few hot keys helps me move faster on it. Hoping to see MS port all there software and apps over to the metro UI.
 
The way that I understand it is that MSE is actually bundled with Windows Defender now. So you no longer need to buy added antivirus if you do not need anything better than MSE.

Now that I am used to the start screen I actually am alright with it. since I usually use keyboard shortcuts more than the mouse anyway it was not all that much of an adjustment for me.
 
Well I must admit that the bootup time in Windows 8 is pretty fast and good.
But still I would never buy new OS because of faster bootup time since I turn on my computers and then leave them on for months all until I have to restart them (in the case something blocked or went wrong).So restarting every few months is really not a big deal even if the bootup time takes let's say 5 to 10 minutes lol.

As for the RAM usage I also must say that Windows 8 does a great job,but then again I would never buy new OS because of lower RAM usage since my XP OS on just 512 MB of RAM memory runs perfectly together with more than 25 background running programs and all other processes and other running foreground programs.
But I must admit that it took me a long time to make XP to work that good on just 512 MB of RAM memory lol.
Not to mention how old my main computer is lol.

512 MB is barely enough even for XP. You must be forced to use IE6 for your browser, I feel sorry for you.
 
XP can run on 512MB and in some cases it runs very nicely on it, but I'd still recommend at least 1GB for it.
 
Eh I had a few machines with XP and 512MB RAM and they ran OK. I'd still say 1 or 2GB though is best.

I am calling BS on this. There is absolutely no need for more than 512mb on XP for browsing the web and basic usage. I still use my XP VM with 400mb set aside and one core and it browses the web just fine.

That being said, if you do more than what most people do on XP, then 1GB+ would be better. But surfing the web is not one of those things that need that much.
