Hello.. I am trying to fix my aunts computer and when i turn it on it gives me this message:

A device file that is specified in the system.ini file is damaged.
It may be needed to run windows.

You may need to run the windows setup program again. If the file is included in another software package, you may need to reinstall the software that uses the file.
C:\windows\system\VMM32\VWIN32.VXD
Press Any key to continue

So i pressed a key to continue and a bunch of other errors come up. I want to reinstall the OS and i have both the System CD's but i dont know what to do.

PLease help! Thanks!

** Is there anyway i can reinstall or fix this problem using Command Prompt when the computer starts?

can you boot it into safemode?

hmmm i got a worm that did this to but i "had" windows 2000 if you have the setup cd reinstall it it sholdent mess up your current files may mess up installed programs. or google the file and palce it in c:\windows c:\windows\system and c:\windows\system32. i know more about 98 and dos.
if you can boot from cd ut it in and boot if not make a system disk and boot from it.

Do you have a 95 startup floppy prepared with cd rom support? If you start the setup program manually by booting from the floppy and changing to the D or cd drive depending on the drive letter designation(hopefully D) you type setup or setup.exe at the dos prompt there and press enter to startup the installer. This method can be used to overwrite the current installation and have WIN 95 up and running again.

If you are familiar with dos commands you can boot from the 95 startup floppy and change to the "C:>" prompt for a manual deletion of the current Windows directory. Once at the dos prompt for the hard drive you would type in "deltree windows" just like it is spelled there and press enter. You will then be asked if you want to delete the Windows directory.

If you are without the cd device drivers or don't even have the original boot floppy you will have to download the files from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm Unlike newer versions of Windows you can not boot direct off of the number #1 installation disk unless it was prepared as a bootable recovery disk. The above is comparable to the MS article on 95 located on a quick earch through the MS data base at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/186771/EN-US/ 95 was always fun here. :)
