Im adding a wireless router to an old computer with windows98se on it, and am having trouble. It is asking me to insert windows 98 se disk, which i do not have. apparently he linksys card needs some files from the disk. Where can i find these files?

maybe i asked wrong, but i do not need the linksys drivers, i have the cd for that, what i need are the files that windows 98se disk has to run the linksys program, for wireless internet devices. the computer came with 98se on it, and no disk.

Without the original disk whether full install or recovery you won't find the cab files seen on one of those. The NetCheck tool seen at Linksys http://www.linksysfix.com/netcheck/?callerID=WS&lid=4118478292B06&randseed=0.8369322301902031 requires at least XP to see any needed drivers or updates downloaded.

The problem with the drivers on the disk is that they are probably too new for 98SE and meant for ME/2000/XP there. With the incorrect version of drivers the installer will then request the Windows cd.

At the download page you can try selecting the particular model there from the dropdown list seen at http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Content_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416835852&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper Select 98SE as the OS to see if the correct driver version is still available.

If you locate the correct set first remove the Linksys card, install the driver set on the next startup, and then shutdown to reinstall the card. See if Windows will then detect the card once the correct drivers are on.
