a friend has a computer and he changed monitors and now the computer get to the verifyingdmi pool data and then get and error message invalid system disk but the is no floppy in the a drive and no cd in the cd rom how can we fix this problem i am using a public computer to ask for help

Make sure the hard drive is still connected properly.
If it is connected and working properly boot off the Windows 98 boot floppy and try a chkdsk and fdisk /mbr.

I'm looking at that and now I'm wondering if the format c: /s still formats the drive or not... I know there's some way to JUST copy the system files...

Eh, well I found a guide:

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000474.htm

It does it another way so maybe you could follow that. If that doesn't work, searching for "verifying dmi pool data" gives you quite a few solutions relative to your problem.

That's the same link I just posted for the guide there! :P The option to do this in two steps also works too. You can first use the "Format C:" command once you decide to wipe the current drive and everything on it. The second command is then "sys C:" for seeing the basic dos files then copied to the drive. This will make the drive itself bootable.

The other single command method usually works but can see problems at times with the /s switch. But that's dos for you. Have a few floppies onhand for creating a boot disk if needed. Those can get fussy at times as well. The thing to try first is what Camper posted earlier if the drive has things you want to keep there howver If that fails try the "sys C:" command first to gain dos access before a reformat.

Quick Answer

Its Windows 98, what you expect lol.
No no no, its Microsoft lol but I must say vista has been good to me.

Maybe you need to upgrade.

Upgrading to XP alone would make life a little easier there depending on the hardware environment being considered into that. For an effective recovery of the current installation some steps in dos will be needed. 98 can easily be reinstalled over itself unlike what you would see in XP and Vista. You would then need to reinstall all drivers and programs for a fast fix that way. Reformatting for a reinstall will wipe everything off.
