Windows explorer problem....

Hello,

Can someone help me with this stupid (probably noob-like) problem. In windows explorer i went into 'tools' then folder options, then 'file types', 'folder', 'advanced' etc in order to change my windows explorer so that i had the 'folder tree' (if thats what u call it) down the left hand side to make navigating thru my folders quicker. I set 'explore' as the default which has always worked as advertised before. except once before, and now!
Now the default option when i double click on a folder is to go to the damn 'search' page. when i right click i see that search is on top and highlighted with open and explore below it.
My question is how do i change it so that explore is my default double click choice.
note: i went into 'file folder' first and may have clicked ok to get back to the choice for 'folder'. it has 'find as an option in that so i dont know if that is the cause.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as last time this happened i couldnt figure it out and ended up reformatting my hdd again out of frustration.
HELP!!!

Major goof reformatting the drive for a simple change of settings. When you first open W.Explorer you can go right upto the task bar at the top of the window and bring down the "view" menu. Under "explorer bar" you choose what is or isn't displayed in a left column by checking that off. In the folder options the center tab is the other section for additional view settings.

Ive got that part happening but when i double click a folder in the main window the default (highlighted) action is 'search' so it brings up the xp search function. when i right click a folder then 'search' is the highlighted action at the top of the list. i need to find out how to change it back to 'explore'.
Any ideas?.........

Are you seeing the animated wizard character at the bottom of the left column? If you are you simply have the search button on the explorer pressed. Try clicking on the "Folders" button next to it and scroll down the left column then to click on the MyComputer link.

You probably have the "remember last opened" option checked that is reopening the search. Now open the folders section up and then close Windows Explorer at that point. Reopen explorer after to see if the folders are seen with the my video, pictures, documents links shown at the top.

when i double click on a folder it opens a new window with the search thing (with the dog in the bottom left corner). in that window i clicked 'folders' (in the toolbar) which then changed the small left hand side to the explorer folders tree, i went down to my computer but that just took me to the my computer folder. i can cruise thru folders as normal on the small side but in the larger main part my default action is still 'search'.
How do i change the 'remember last opened' option?
i opened explorer and selected folders then closed and reopened but it still has search as default

i think this might have something to do with the folders options. i went into folder options then 'file folder' first which has 'find' as its only choice. i pressed ok to get out (stupid). i meant to go into 'folder' then set 'explore' as the default which makes the left hand side of my folder windows into the explorer tree. could the file types part of folder options have anything to do with this ridiculous problem?

I know what you did. The next tine you open explorer go right upto the view drop down menu and choose the "explorer bar". Once that opens to the right see if the top item(search) has a check mark next to it. Make sure you put a check next to the "folders" there and uncheck search. Also go into folder options again and make sure you didn't check the "open windows in separate processes" box there. That will insure files and folders will appear in the same window.
