Windows firewall will get the job done, I highly recommend you use it along with AVG Free Editon. Or you can buy the full version that has its own firewall.

I personally hate stuff provided by Windows and use Comodo Firewall - does a really good job and is free!

No Windows Firewall will not get the job done, it's a horrible firewall, the only time it's blocked traffic is for video games, twice Starcraft wouldnt work with two different people, twice I had to disable Windows Firewall on their systems and then it worked

AVG firewall isnt that good either, definitely not worth purchasing. I've found the best combination to be "Comodo Internet Security" (Freeware) for the firewall and decent A/V scanner, "Avast!" (Much better scanner) "Spybot S&D" for "Teatimer" (Monitors registry changes) and common sense, I havent had a major infection in three years now and for the longest time I only ran a firewall

Windows Firewall causes more problems then it fixes, so yeah turn it off, Comodo's a great choice

Additionally downloading Firefox will help, IE is much less secure, I've never gotten a virus surfing with Firefox. IE on the other hand..

The most infected systems I've seen were Internet Exploder + Windows Firewall, I dont trust either
