Windows format made my Ubuntu partition vanish

Alright so I formatted my old PC recently, which previously had 2 partitions: one with Windows XP SP3 and one with Ubuntu 14.04 (not sure about Ubuntu version). After I formatted my XP partition, I cannot in any way access the Ubuntu one. What can I do?

Also, can I in some way have control over the Ubuntu partition from my XP partition?

Lastly, I want to replace the Ubuntu partition with a Debian one (after it is fixed and I move all my files to my XP one). Will I have to reprogram the partitions beforehand, or does it give an option during the installation?

Thanks beforehand.
