the tool is used to validate that your version of XP is legit. It needs to communicate with MS severs and therefore needs to go throught the firewall.
If you using a valid OS then there are no issues i know of.

Byteman/Buzz: Is there any spyware that uses this route??

Is it really communicating with a MS server? If so what info is it sending. We do not know the answer to either of these questions. Without the proper tools in place (and very few of us have those toole) we will never know. Do we just put our trust in Microsoft and hope everything is above board or has our financial data just been uploaded to some server in China? We do not know.

I think that is the major problem. There has been nothing posted to my knowledge that tells us exactly what this piece of software is doing. And if there is info posted, have they told us the real story or is there a hidden agenda?

If anyone has good information on the validity of this software I, for one, would like to know. I am not interested in hearing the official MS line about it. They print whatever they want. I want to hear good info from several third party sources before making my own decision.

yes we know
yes its easy to tell
so stop all this big brother conspiracy crap

If it were from Microsoft it would do nothing illegal. You can't sit back here and suspect Microsoft to steal your financial data. It would be too risky and if they got caught, that would be the end. They know better than to do that stuff, plus that idea is just plain absurd. It's just checking to see the Windows install is legit so you can access Microsoft Downloads and Materials. If it's from Microsoft, it's not doing anything bad. (I'm not sure about collecting personal data, but if they say it doesn't, I beleive it, for them to say it doesn't, then to do it would be a bad move, again.). I'm not sure if there are known malwares that use this name to trick people, though.
