I have (3) WD HDD's one has completely failed and the other two are showing up as hdd problem with windows 7. I have run wd lifeguard and one even though it works has not passed the smart test and the other has. What the crap is going on with these drives?? I though WD was the best and I have 3 hdd that were bought in the last year and all of them appear to be failing. Any thoughts on this why these are failing??

(1) WD BLUE 500gb - not passing WD lifeguard - 6 months old

(1) WD Black 500gb - DEAD - not spinning - 1 year old

(1) WD Black 500gb - windows detecting problem - 2 weeks old

Do I need to ground these to the case ??

take the side panel off, unmount the drive and see if it works just sitting on the desk or in your hand. if they then you have a short. i hear electrical tape in the HDD mounts works well against shorts.

The thing is, the PSU is supposed to ground itself to the case. Just to confirm this all, I took a multimeter and touched around the case. Touching the rear of the case and the side of the hard drive caused a short; though parts of the HD did not, I guess it's the type of metal being used.

Anyway, if you're having problems and it is a result of something shorting out, I think you're problem is going to be power supply related. While electrical tape would correct this as mentioned, it's more/less working around the actual problem... As long as they are screwed in correctly and nothing's touching the controller board, you should be fine.

Are you two "Black" drives the same model?(same specs, revision, etc...) I ask this because maybe they had a bad series. A few years ago I had a HORRIBLE experience with Maxtor, going through around 6 drives (all covered by warranty, thank goodness). And so you don't think it's me, I sold the final drive I recieved to a friend, warning him about the problems. I found out later that drive also died :P

Well.. they are not grounded to the case as it has toolless design that uses plastic clips to lock the hdd in place. Some cases have screws that hold the hdd in place and it also grounds it to the case thats why I was curious if this is damaging my drives.

Both black hdd's are basically the same but I did notice they changed one of the IC's making it a revision of some sort. I was wrong about this new drive however it was flagging an error from my other hdd blue one. So I have one dead black and a failing blue 500gb.

As long as the drive is touching the metal at all, it's grounded. But regardless, it doesn't need to be grounded to function. Drives will work sitting on a desk or wherever just fine. To me it sounds more like faulty drives...

I hope I got a better revision of the black 500gb as it DOES have different component on the PCB. One of the IC's was made by samsung and it has been replaced with a EtronTech chip and the M chip has a different part number. The new hdd is good I was wrong. It was flagging the other HDD even though I was not booted into it.. according to the error report...

The other black 500gb I believe one of the IC's failed causing it's problem. I think they have resolved this issue.. I thought I could just swap the PCB but they are not the same.. wish I knew where to get another PCB so I can get my info before sending it back..

Is there a way to fix bad sectors?? That is the problem with my blue 500gb hdd. Or maybe I am better off sending it back hoping for a revision on this drive as well..

The case should have a earth ground from the 3rd pin on the power cord which stablilizes the AC wave form and eliminates static electricity.. I think I am going to ground my drives from now on...
