my sister installed something from windows media player. And it said to restart, nd she restarted. When she restarted the computer, the windows icons shortly appeared and disappeared.
I restarted several times and the icons would not appear, therefore before this can happend i clicked on internet explorer.(nd currently looking for solution)
Can any one help me?

1. Icons are not appearing when windows starts up
2. It shortly appears and disappears within few seconds

Go into the START menu and let the drop down list on the right come down. From there scroll down to the Windows Media Player link and right click on it to choose the "create new shortcut" option. Once that is done scroll down further to the bottom to see "Windows Media Player (2)" and simply drag that onto the desktop. You can then right click on the new icon and choose the "General" tab to see "Windows Media Player (2)" again. Simply use the backspace key to remove the (2) and press enter. You now have WMP on the desktop with a normal appearance.

my problem is my icons and start menu would not show. -DUE TO MY SISTERS WMP INSTALLATION.

OUCH! That's a Windows issue there alright. You could have had the unlikely bad install from a bad download that crosslinked to protected system files or something was knocked out. Boot into safe mode and remove WMP first. If that still sees a problem with the Start menu you will then have to plan on a manual startup of the system restore process. Go to the link here and follow the instructions to perform this if needed and you are running XP.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304449&sd=tech

i'll check that out

On booting the system you would press the F8 key just after the initial post tests have completed and prior to the first sign of Windows beginning to load. At that time you will enter the start menu where you will find several options. The one you are concerned with is the "safe mode and command prompt only" as outlined at the Microsoft link. Ignore the "Last known configuration that worked" option since you are after a manual system restore.

Upon choosing that option and exit of the menu the system will go as far as a dos type prompt where you then type in: "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" and then press the enter key to start the process. This will use a restore point to bring the system back prior to the WMP installation. Most likely you will see a calendar where you choose any date prior to when WMP was first installed. If all goes as it should the normal desktop will seen and working when completed. But follow the onscreen instructions closely there.

In the event that this method fails to see results you would then have to perform an "install to repair" of Windows itself. You would need the installation disk at that time in order to follow the instructions needed. Right now, however, you want to run the system restore at this time. Post results here after.

very strange thing just happened. I restarted into boot mode, however it froze. So restarted the computer again and my old desktop poped up(from my old hard drive). Very confusing...

Are you sure you didn't go into the bios and change something in the boot order? I was under the assumption that the 80gb primary was where the problem was being seen. Remember you want the F8 start menu not the advanced settings seen in the bios itself.
