Windows Install Black Screen of Death

Hi,

I have a Dell Latitude C400 with Fedora Core 4 on it. I decided I wanted to go back to Windows because I've been using it with school and it's easier for me if it's running Windows. Every time I choose to boot from CD it'll find the CD, say hit any key to boot from disc. Then it begins to check hardware config, once it's done with that it goes to a black screen.

I've tried with numerous discs, and every time I have this problem. If I put a Fedora or Ubuntu disc it works fine. What could be stopping the computer from booting and installing all the way?

Hi,

I'd try removing all the partitions. Windows can't handle the Linux partition types, normally this isn't a problem but try removing all partitons and creating just one NTFS. I've resolved this kind of thing before this way. Do a slow format for error checking.

One of my problems is I can't even get to the screen to delete partitions, plus I'd like to not have to delete Fedora if i'm not sure this will work.

Hi,

Point taken, and I can't promise you this will resolve your issue. I tell you what, disconnect the hard drive, and load the windows CD. If the black screen problem stops, and you progress further into the installation, you can rightly assume that their is something about the Hard Disk thats causing the problem. This isn't a garrantee that wiping it will make it go away, but it narrows things down somewhat.
If you haven't another drive, you'd have a choice to make.

If you choose to delete the partition you'd be able to use the Fedora disk to wipe all partitions. Most linux distribution installation programs give you the option to make/delete partitons.
