Windows is for ever upgrading

I have two computers (a laptop and a home build one) that do the same thing: they upgrade the OS software every time I close down or start up the computer. I do not understand this, for I have a third (home build) computer that does not do this. All run Windows 7, and I have had problems with the computers that keep on upgrading before. (They start to hang up frequently, specially on PDF files and IE) I have used the restore disks that came with the laptop to see if that solved the problem, it did for a while, than it started this upgrade process again. I used also a repair disk (ebay) where you have to use the Widows code from the laptop to load in the OS system, with no avail.
The question is, why does the OS upgrade every time you use it? I can not remember my computers in the past doing this frequent upgrading. Is that not only a few times when a change is made in the OS by Microsoft?
Any comments any one?

I used to have this issue on my old Dell desktop and it was solved by going into the control panel and manually updating. Make sure to update all of your drivers too. I then got a bios update for my motherboard and everything has run fine since.
 
watch the bios updating tho.only update the bios to fix a specific issue,and then only update if there is one that deals with the issue.bios is the one thing you dont update unless its necessary.
 
Probably what is going on is that installing updates have failed and it keeps retrying. Look up your update history and it will tell you if they failed or not.

You are right, I found quite a few "important" upgrades that failed, so that can be the cause of it. They were dated back in November. Why did they fail?
Anything that I can do about it?
 
What error code are you getting? Try installing a few at a time to find out what update is causing the issue. I find that microsoft net framework causes a lot of issues when updating. How many updates are trying to install?

I have to check on that. I noticed that when I type in "Updates" I get a lot of listings, with quite a few commented as "Failed", between others that are "Successful" I did not pay any attention to any error codes included with the failed ones, but I will look again.
UPDATE - I did so, and on this computer there are no failed ones. I have it mostly on my Laptop, which I just re-loaded with a fresh OS, because I had other troubles. (Updating the Adobe Reader would hang up the computer, a bad sign in the past) so I can not check that one just yet.
 
UPDATE Johnb35 Error code = 8020000 - unknown cause. And there quite a few of them. Is there any way to erase those, so that it does not keep on trying? I really do not care one way or another, just so I do not have to wait endlessly for it trying to update.
I have it set now already set for "do not check for updates automatically", I am sick and tired for it to endlessly trying to do so. I rather take my chances.

Tell it to ignore a specific update? Just open Windows Update, click on the updates to see the list, and right click to hide the update.
 
Try this so we can get a specific error code.

Go to windows update and have it check for updates. Then click on only 1 entry that has failed in the past and only allow that one entry to update, uncheck all others. Continue with the update and let me know if it installs correctly or fails and give me the error code. There are a bunch of ways to fix windows update errors but need the specific code.

UPDATE - I have 8 updates that failed I get the following error codes to begin with
8024 4022
' 4001F
' 4402C
' 401B (No spacing between 8024)
80072ee2

Many error codes here. First of all run the windows update troubleshooter and see what the outcome is.

Then you may want to run Windows update repair if the troubleshooter doesn't solve it.

Download and run it. keep clicking on next until you see a list of items. Uncheck everything but number 16 - repair windows updates then click on start. Should only take a minute or two then reboot system and try the updates again.
 
OK will do.

UPDATE- Tried your previous suggestion, on check for updates, it shows 115 required updates, on update history, it showed 46 updates with 27 failed ones. I checked the failed ones against the list of ones in the updates to be done, they do not appear there. So it seems that the computer does not retry to install the failed ones again.

UPDATE - I tried the above, with not much help, I get only the message that it has failed. When I click for more help, it comes back with an generic error code, 80080008 "unknown error".

I have by now 150+ updates that I have hidden to prevent the computer from endlessly trying to update. If I take any one on the list, and try to update that one, it fails again and again with the same 80080008 error code as above.

The program http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/down...ir-all-in-one/ did not work as you suggested. I got lost trying to make sense out of it.

Just a general question, what part is actually involved in the updating process? Is it the processor itself, or memory or BIOS? I am to the point of thinking that there is something seriously wrong with the hardware, and if so, like just to junk the laptop and get another one.
What do you think?
 
All those updates are for windows itself.

Try doing the following.

Run command prompt using admin privileges. Click on start, click on accessories, right click on command prompt and click on run as administrator.

type the following and press enter after each.

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
net start wuauserv

Reboot system and see if that helps any.

I gave you specific instructions on using windows repair software. Download and install it. Open it, keep clicking on the next button until you get to this page here.



Uncheck all but number 16 which is "repair windows updates" then click on start button to run the repair. After its completed, reboot the system and try updating again.
