I have a computer that I bought from my friends work. The computer uses Windows XP. When I start it up it is asking me for user name and password to login into the computer. I don't know the username and password. Do I have to buy a new windows disk to overide this. What are my options here?

If it has XP Pro installed, at the Welcome screen, press Ctrl/Alt/Delete twice, and type in Administrator into the user pane with no password. Hit Enter.
Once you're in the Administrators account, go into the Control Panel, and delete all users (except the Administrator account of course). Then add your own account or you can continue using the Administrators account although it's not recommended that you do that.
If you can't get into the Administrators account, then you can try the following link for a solution.

Or you can ask your friend for the user name and password.

Good luck!

Also if you have XP home, you can press F8 right before Windows loads and select the option to boot into safe mode. It'll automatically log you in. Then, like normal, go into the control panel where you can edit/delete passwords with complete Administrator privileges.

(Note: The account that logs in when you are in safe mode is the Administrator account on every XP computer. With XP Pro, though, you can log in uwing Quick69GTO's method, but that method is disabled on XP Home)

If that doesn't work, you can always get the ophcrack linux live cd http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/ and boot up to crack your windows password.

Good Luck
