Windows Media Centre and Copied Software

I recently bought a new laptop that came with Windows Media Centre and I've been unable to install any software where I do not have the original discs. At first I thought there was a problem with the disc drive, but I brought it back to the shop and they were adament that there was nothing wrong with it. This got me thinking that this Media Centre edition of Windows might have anti-piracy measures built into it. Could anyone tell me for sure?

Prior to this, I had a laptop with XP home edition and never had any problems.

Yes XP MCE does have validation, and anti-piracy features built in, and it wont let you install certain updates or do certain things unless it can be validated.

Are you using an illegal/pirated copy of MCE?

No. MCE came with my new computer when I bought it last week.

I've tried to install XP Home edition, but the system would not let me - presumably because it was not the original disc.
