Windows Media Player 11

Whenever I download a certain movie (legally), I sometimes encounter this message,

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

Is there any way around this - Is there another player or setting adjustment I can use to be able to view this movie?

Its an avi format and I've checked, WMP11 does support it.

Try Video Lan Client (VLC), it plays a wide variety of video formats with little problems. You could also try DivX Player.

You prabally need new Codecs for the file to work. I personally do not know much about them, so you canwait for someone else to respond or try and research it yourself.

the chances are you are tryping to play an avi file, well you will need to download seperate codeces in orde to run it, even though wmp says its got the codecs for avi files i havnt got an avi file to work without seperate codecs,

try ffshow this works

Do you know where, and how I get these codecs?

Download...

For the first, download from the link on top. There are about five of them on the page that opens up. For the second link, download from any of the FULL links (maybe STANDARD would do the trick too). Do let us know how it goes. Sorry I did not get back to you earlier.

I don't know if you solved the problem but AFAIK you need some codecs, I would download K-Lite Codec Pack 2.72 Full the one that Jan posted, I use it and it plays everything, I have only installed WMP11 and QuickTime player. It plays all.
