"Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I get the message "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close, sorry for the inconvienence" everytime I try to open windows media player.

I am running Windows Xp sp2, and my computer i think is nearly free of viruses/spyware

PLEASE HELP!!!
 
uninstall and install

Assuming you have Windows XP HOme or Windows XP Pro (Not Windows Media Center Edition)

Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/Windows Media Player/Remove

then

download WMP from here

then install it...
