Windows Media Player is playing up...

Since I reinstalled Windows 7 two weeks ago, my PC has been playing up and acting a little strange, maybe the installation of Windows wasn't right or something, I don't know, but Windows Media Player 12 is now refusing to play MOV and MP4 videos. If I play an MP4 video rendered in AVCHD I can only hear the audio, I don't see a picture, and if I play a MOV file I have the same problem. These videos worked fine before I reinstalled Windows, so I know WMP12 can play them. What's up? I don't want to use VLC or any alternative media player as I like WMP12.

You'll need to install a codec pack, not sure which one will work best though. I didn't think wmp could play those types of files though.

It can play them as it did without any codecs before I reinstalled. WMP12 can play a lot more file types than WMP10 and 11 could.

Like johnb35 said. You need video codecs in order to see the picture from the videos.Windows Media Player 12 has a LOT less codecs than VLC does so you need to install them in order to see the image of those videos in Windows Media Player 12.
The most usual video codec for most videos is XVID.So try to install that one for your MP4 video files and see if it works. If not,you will then need to determine which video codec(s) your video files use and then install them.

Same of course applies for audio in the video files. The most usual audio codec for most videos is AC3 filter.

Cheers!
