Windows Media Player Problem

My media player will play a couple of files just fine and then it stops responding. After that other programs stop also. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
 
Does this only happen with Media Player or other programs too. Have you tried to scan for viruses and spyware recently? Also, there are alternatives to Windows Media Player that are as, or more compatable if you should desire a switch. I personally use Media Player Classic. It might be worth your time to try it out.
 
are the extensions of the files all the same? window media have issues with .avi files.

oh, and do you mean the whole system just stops responding? or just other programs currently running?
