Windows Media Player won't add files

Out of nowhere, there are no files in my WMP library. It comes up with a blank page saying: There are no items in this library yet - the Player is searching for digital media files in the background. Click Here to add files to the library now.
However, when I click it and go to the add files page, I browse for the directory, as I have always had it, and select ok. It should start adding the files, but the add files page just goes away without adding anything. When I go back to the page, the directory info I had just put in is gone. So I just can't add items.

Also, I can't even select burn media, it is grayed out. I have a blank disk, a new dvd/cd burner, but can't get it to come up.

Thanks in advance.

Aw crap! Dump it! Go into the add/remove Windows components section of the add/remove programs and first remove it there. Afterwards the "HKEY_Local_Machine>Software>Microsoft>media player key has to be removed. From there after restarting the system go for WMP 10! 11 for XP is crap like it is for Vista!

....any actual suggestions? It has been fine for quite a while now. It seemed to have a corrupted database which I got rid of, but is still not letting me add anything. It could have something to do with sharing media to the xbox360.

Install itunes. A much better music player / program!!! :):)

Are you kidding? I use ITunes only in Vista while WMP 10 in XP! :P

Microsoft now expects you to go out and buy retail programs like Cyberlink's PowerDVD or Roxio's own media player to replace the lack of video playback seen in 11 while 10 had everything in it. WMP 11 should be relabeled to ME's WMP! :P

The actual suggestion was already made for the losing player! Others have asked how to get rid of 11 on XP as well. The add/remove Windows components and the manual removal of the main key for 11 allows for going for 10 which is the choice over 11 any day of the week. Your other option is simply ignoring that 11 is there and running the latest version of ITunes.
