Using XP Pro. is what happened i was i was screwing around and went to update.microsoft.com i accidently installed an update for windowe media player to ver 11 i think. reboot and played some music but i didnt care for the newer ver. i did and uninstall or rollback. Well the default ver will not work now either. Windows media player has a problem and wants to send error report. The old ver worked fine for music and the small video through email for family and friends. anybody have a clue on how to get it back? i went back to update and does not show anything about the media player or the newer ver. any ideas?

What to do there is go into the add/remove Windows components section of the Control Panel>add/remove programs section and uncheck WMP there. This besides removing one registry key will see WMP off entirely. The main registry is as follows. But you only remove that one entry.

Type regedit in the Run prompt off of the Start menu and go to "HKEY_LOCALMACHINE>microsoft>media player". Highlight that one key and go upto the menu bar and open the edit dropdown menu and simply click on delete with that key highlighted. From there manually remove the WMP folder in the Program Files and simply download and install the WMP 10.

Then go for WMP 10 and put up with the popups for updating to WMP 11 by answering no or canceling them out. WMP 10 is downloaded at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...53-3759-40cf-80d5-cde4bbe07999&DisplayLang=en

XP Pro and Home versions come with WMP 9 being the default. The 10 version has far better support for dvd playback as well as various video file types and audio. The method above is the fast and only real way to see WMP 11 removed effectively. The 10 version will go right on afterwards. Just remember to use the custom option at the MS update site and uncheck the WMP 11 item and don't use automatic updating.
 
thanks PC eye. I'll play with that suggestion and let ya know the results. I tried to edit the registery key and refused to let me delete it. I have other admin profiles for backup in case mine gets corrupted. it wouldnt let delete there either. I rebooted in safe mode and tried with same results. I havent given up yet. I just have a busy schedule right now with working. ya gave me some fresh ideas and i'll run with it.

Just check in add/remove programs if windows media player 11 is there if it is remove it and windows should reset to the default of windows media player 9. From there you can download windows media 10 from that link that Pc Eye has given.
 
Once you unchecked the add/remove Windows components item Windows removed it upon restarting the system. The main reason the key or folder couldn't be removed earlier was that some part of WMP 11 was still active in memory. Now you should be able to remove both the reg key and folder to see 10 go on easy enough. That will likely require a system restart as well.
 
BAM.........i got it back. don't ask me how or why. I shutdown and came home and tried again. its working for what i wanted it for.

The one thing I did kind of forget before you tried this was the need to restart the system once you unchecked the WMP item and removed the reg key to see any parts of 11 unloaded first. Without the reg key no part of 11 would load up upon booting Windows again. But that's the effective way to remove 11 to go back to WMP 10. Just remember not to click ok when you see an update now popup when opeing it up.
