Windows Movie Maker suddenly missing codex

So I ran all the stuff to get rid of malware a while back and now Movie Maker can’t load my movies anymore including the ones I already edited. It says something about needing a codex.
How can I get the codex back or reinstall Movie Maker?
Microsoft wasn’t much help and recommended 8.1.

OK I just realized that the video is a .mov file which isn’t supported by Movie Maker. The thing that bothers me is that I cannot remember how I managed to edit the other movies that I recorder with the same camera last Christmas. I had to have converted it, but I don’t know what with.

Update: I searched my computer looking for a .mov converter and i don't have one. So now I have to go on the scary task of finding one on the internet and hope that its not filled with malware.

I wish I would have know this before i recorded the video or I would have used a different camera.

This problem is very easy to fix.

Download and install the newest version of the software called FORMAT FACTORY and use it to convert all your video files to WMV.
After that you can load them in the Windows movie maker and do with them whatever you want. ;)

FORMAT FACTORY looks like this:

Cheers!

Thanks S.T.A.R.S.. I'll give it a try. I got so frustrated with the other video that I just put it on YouTube as it was and it took 4 hrs for a 3 min video to upload.

Windows movie maker don't like various codecs and that usually causes it to crash unfortunately.
So just use FORMAT FACTORY to convert all your videos to WMV and then insert them in Windows movie maker and do with them whatever you want.
FORMAT FACTORY is great since it is FREE and can convert ALMOST ANYTHING INTO ANYTHING. ;)

I don't see the point in getting QuickTime. He's trying to use movie maker to edit it. What STARS suggested should work fine.

Yes that is exactly correct. I want to edit my videos from my CoolPix camera to upload to YouTube.

When I bought this Camera I believed it made movies in MPEG-4 that could be edited in Movie maker, but I can not see anywhere in the settings to format it into MPEG.

The weird thing is that I actually edited some Christmas video and uploaded it to YouTube back in December, but now I can't even view the original video without QuickTime.

My memory isn't that good anymore and I just don't know what happened or what I used to edit the video. The only explanation that I can come up with is that there must have been a codex driver on my computer at that time that was compatible with Movie Maker.

I did at one time download a program to view some security videos from work that might have had the proper codex. I can't remember the program, but I think it was something like DVR?? or something.

If you provide the computer with quicktime, it has the codec.

I’m not exactly following you. I just deleted QuickTime because I thought it might be interfering with the camera download format since the camera specifically says MPEG.
I don’t see any way to edit with QuickTime like adding text, cutting out useless clips or changing the upload size so that it doesn’t take 4 hrs per 3 min of video.
Am I missing something?

Yes you are. You can continue to use Movie Maker as before by reinstalling Quicktime that has the Apple (.mov) codec.

Really! Well I guess it won't hurt to reinstall QuickTime and see what happens. I'll give it a try, but if it works then I'm still confused as to why it didn't work when I first started this thread.

No it doesn't work. :(
I just reinstalled QuickTime 7 and all I get from Windows Movie Maker is this:

"The file C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\DSCN1118.MOV cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

Here is an easy way:

Find some MOV file on your computer.Right click on it,go to OPEN WITH
and then from the list choose Quick Time.Turn on the option to open MOV files with Quick Time every time from now on and click OK.

Also take a look at the Quick Time options to see if you can turn on the associations from there also.If you can and that is not turned on then turn it on there also.

If none of this did not work then simply do what I told you in my previous threads.
Use FORMAT FACTORY to convert your MOV files to AVI or WMV (or some other format which Windows Movie Maker accepts) and then you will be able to import it into Windows Movie Maker without any problems.

Cheers!

You know I was completely mistaken about MPEG-4. I thought it would work in Windows Movie maker, but I just found out today that it is completely a QuickTime Format designed for the MAC.
I spent much of the day looking for another camera that I can use with the free Windows Movie maker, but almost all the cameras today are using the MPEG-4.
After reading about all the loss that occurs during the conversion, I’m now playing with the idea of buying a Video editing program that will edit H.264/MPEG-4 directly.
So far I’ve only looked at Cyberlink PowerDirector 12 Ultra, but I’m still looking

If you configure conversion options in FORMAT FACTORY correctly and then if in Windows Movie Maker you save your video with the correct video settings then there will be almost no quality loss at all.
I am talking from the experience.
I used Windows Movie Maker so many times and all my videos look so damn great.

So...in FORMAT FACTORY set the best video quality settings before converting the video to let's say AVI.
After that import that converted file in Windows Movie Maker and save it using the best video quality settings.
Here is a list of the video quality settings in XP version of Windows Movie Maker:

And here is a list of the video quality settings in Vista version of Windows Movie Maker:

So this is how I would do things if I were you.
The quality will be so damn great AND it is completely FREE!

NOTE: If you cannot import AVI files or watch them with Windows Media Player, install the XVID video codec. It has a great level of compression AND the video quality is so freaking awesome!

Ok I took your advice and downloaded Format Factory. It’s converting right now and at 50%. I have to say that I have such a hard time downloading free software because it just doesn’t make since that anything is free.

So far everything has been easy although I still haven’t seen anything that resembles the screen shots you have, but I guess I haven’t got there yet.
