windows not genuine after repair

Hey all, my buddy has an asus laptop...i think its the g60 or something. It has windows 7 on it. About a month ago his charger stopped working, so he brought it to best buy to get repaired under warranty. They said they replaced the mobo, and now it says his version of Win7 isnt genuine.

So he brought it back and they basically said it isnt their problem, and that the hardware replacement wouldnt have caused this.

What should be done about this?

click on the start menu, right click on computer, then go to properties. On the bottom of the system page is the activation section. Click "Change product key" and type in the key on the bottom of the laptop.

Now im interested in if that works?
interesting. i thought about it and thinking might just have to call microsoft and explain.
gets back to motherboard and video cards.
thats what will shut the operating system down.
call microsoft.

I would have thought it was their problem; they should have informed you of the implications to the OS before changing the motherboard. Mind you, if it is under warranty?

As I understand it, if the OS was retail, it can be transferred to a new MB. If it was OEM, it cannot - goes with the MB.

I had my serial number corrupted by some malware many years ago. I phoned MS who played with my PC online and they gave me a new number. Different situation to yours.

I would think that best buy would do something about it. He said that the product key on the bottom of the computer is rubbing off and he can't read the whole thing
