I know this ytpe of question has been asked many times in here, but this is kind of weird, i just installed a new cd rom drive, now with the Nero software that it came with for some reason it didnt work, so i installed sound blaster which i had before and worked well and of course it did, now my cd rom plays music thru soundblaster live..now i had a program called "Adaptec" now for some reason it doesnt recognize my cd rom drive, i have tired to un-install it and re-install it a few times and nothing happends, any idea what is the problem? i changed the jumpers already, the only problem is that this program doesnt see my drive and of course Dell is of no help

Thx

is the cdrom drive being detected in the pc bios ?
do you have the cdrom on the primary IDE cable with the HD or on the secondary IDE by itself or with another device?

is this cdrom replacing an existing cdrom or is this a new add on. ?

if it is with the hd , try moving it to the secondary ide, you may have to reconfig the hd and cdrom jumpers.

i know this is so off subject but why do you say "and of course dell is no help"
i want to buy a dell laptop, when you got problems they dont give you all the info needed?

Ummm , yes Dell is little to no help, so are the rest of the PC help desks. Here is why. They are all watching to see what the other ones are doing. They all are trying to save a buck and sell more that the other. So one pc company cuts it's costs in tech support the others do too, In other words they have the cheapest , all most unskilled techs they can get away with. Most are just reading down a flow chart of what to do. Of course they will honor warranty issues. Do ya want to know what the secret is to get Dell to do what YOU want them to do. Everybody you talk to , the first thing is ask them their name, and do not accept just BOB, get a last name or employee #.
This really freaks them out and they know that they are accountable for what they tell you. No more telling you to format your hard drive to get rid of you. keep a detailed log of time, who you talked too, what you talked about. If you are disatisfied with who you are talking with ask for their supervissor.
Having said that ( actually typed it ) I still like Dell products. I have recommended Dells to a lot of my customers for networks ( peer to peer and domain). I think you should still get the notebook from them, if you have to call just remeber the above, and it will be resolved as fast as possible, chances are you will never have to call. Just post here we are more than happy to help you.:D
