I downloaded and installed the latest windows patches from tuesday. the lower portion of my screen was not normal. the tast bar was gone and replaced by my desktop color. the start bar and its menues would pop up distored as a thin vertical line of grey black and white. However i was able to use keyboard hot keys to get into the control pannel to uninstall the patches and now every thing is fine.

So, why did this happen and did it happen to any one else?
 
I had this problem a while ago, you need to do a repair on your OS, that is what fixed mine!

God luck, i hated this aswell :)
