Windows Reinstall?!

I have too many problems with my windows rite now (probably from viruses) and I have too much junk on my current HD. Well I got a new hard drive and this is my plan: Take out my old HD and put in my new one. Install windows on the new one. Then can I replug my old HD to get some files off of it? I can't copy any files on to a removable because windows isn't detecting it (one of the thousand problems:P )

Also I want to make sure I do things rite this time. (I wasn't sure if I did every thing rite last time). What do I need to do to prepare my HD??

Thanks!

make sure before you remove your current drive you remove your USER account and password, or you will not be able to access the files when you plug it back in...

Or use the same exact ID/Password you use on the current PC.

If you are running XP Home not Pro version without having assigned a password when creating the user account, providing it has administrative access, you can slave the drive to the new one and still copy practically anything you want off it. What types of files you want to copy off of the old drive should be planned out if you are not going to simply drag folders across from one window to another.

Your favorites can be copied into a backup folder at this time even. But you would still have to open each one when copied to the new drive in order to redrag them into the new favorites. That will overwrite the copied files making them active in IE.

Then you shouldn't have too much problem copying otherwise inaccessible files into temp folders right before installing the new drive for ready access. You want to use ptograms like CCLeaner first to free up drive space first. The last thing would be uninstalling programs and removing leftover folders as well.

When going to install Windows on the new drive simply leave that unplugged or you will have to edit the boot.ini afterwards to remove the entry to choose which installation to load at startup. Are you planning to use the old drive for anything or simply remove it after copying the files from it?

So long as you dont have EFS enabled (default although a lot of people enable it) you'll be ok. Killing the passwords is a pretty good idea but it will only matter if your data is in the Microsoft-designated areas
