Windows Security Alert

Hey guys, I was hoping you could help me out with a virus my dad got on his comp. He runs winxp sp3 and gets the phony "Windows Security Alert" with the message:

"Windows reports that computer is infected. Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click here for the scan your computer. etc"

Once his comp starts up, the fake antivirus thing starts popping up messages of phony attacks and he told me he can't open any programs because he gets error messages.

When I first looked at it, the computer was shutting down and "installing windows updates". He doesn't have windows updates turned on. I pushed in the power button to manually shut the computer down when I saw the "updates" going, then started the computer in safe mode and ran ccleaner. I then went to try to update malwarebytes, but got an error message and couldn't. I also looked for hijackthis, but couldn't locate it on his computer, so I just shut it down and started it normally.

***update on this: apparently the windows updates were legit. He told me he turned windows update back on.

I'm still wondering how I'll be able to run a specific program if I need to though, because he said that his internet browser gets hijacked to the phony antivirus website before he can do anything

Okay, I read the "read this first before posting" sticky post to see if there was something else I could try.

I downloaded rkill to a thumb drive in hopes that I might be able to disable the problem long enough to update malwarebytes. Rkill did save a logfile that said there was a proxy running. When I tried again to update mwb it gave me the same 12007 error. So I looked up "can't update malwarebytes" in google and found a site that said you can copy an updated version's virus definitions from a clean computer via thumb drive. So I did that and ran mwb again. I got no update message saying I was out of date, so I ran the quick scan. It took 17 minutes and found 2 infected files and 1 infected registry key. saved logs before and after removal of the problems, and then mwb prompted me to restart in order to remove the reg key. Upon restart, the problem seems to have gone. Here's the mwb post-removal (pre restart) log

As I said, the problem appears to have gone, but I would appreciate closure from you experts :) Thanks , and sorry I didn't read the "read this first" post first. Lesson learned.

Looks like malwarebytes deleted the infections and I don't see anything else in your HJT log.
