I just installed Norton Antivirus and all the virus definitions have been updated, but Windows XP still flashes the red shield icon in my task bar. i click on it and it says that my virus protection is unknown. How do i get windows to recognize that there is an anti-virus software installed and that it's always on?

p.s. Don't just read. Reply! Too many people viewing threads but not contributing to them.

As long as norton seems to be functioning properly, i wouldn't worry about it.It's probably because Symantec (Norton) is presently sueing Microsoft.lol!.You can go into the security center and turn off these alerts so they don't continue to popup.

A couple things come to mind. Do you have it running? Do you see the norton symbol in the task bar? There is a virus that will disable norton...are you sure you dont have it? Try uninstalling norton and them make sure the security advisor is turned on then reinstall. Something is wrong I run norton myself and when I first start my pc the shield will be red until norton loads then it will go away. There is definitely a problem somewhere!

yeah, the norton icon is on the task bar and it's enabled. I also ran a full scan on my system and nothing was found. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I installed Norton from a friend who burned me a copy.
