windows security updates

can someone tell me what's the real importance of these updates? i don't think this is as important as having an antivirus software installed but it only exposes your machine to the internet and viruses... any comments and opinions? thanks..

They are more to protect your computer from hackers kinda. You can read on each update when you go to the site what its purpose is. A lot of them are just to fix a problem that was discovered by or reported to Microsoft. Just install them they don't take up a lot of room and there is a reason Microsoft is putting them out there.
