Hi there, my company get me a new server for testing purpose.This server already install Windows Server 2003 Standard.My question here what i need to know be4 start install and configure server role?
and another que is, every server MUST install DHCP, DNS and Active Directory, its that true?

No you don't have to install any of those services. Frankly, unless you are implementing this server in a medium to large business, there's really not much need for active directory, DNS, and DHCP on a server. A simple router can provide the DHCP and DNS, and you can create local accounts on the few machines you have.

Before we tell you what to do first, it would be beneficial to give us some background info. For instance, is this server going to be placed in a network with few computers, or hundreds? What do you want the server to do (AD, file server, etc.)?
 
this server is implement for medium to large business.This client want to use mic. navision,
SQL Server 2005, SQL Server Reporting Services,
so i think i need to install this server role:

application Server(IIS,ASP.Net)
file server
printer server
mail server (pop3,smtp).

I am not sure exact amount of user will be using this server,may be around 20-50 users.
 
Is this server going to be added to an existing network? You don't need those services if they're already installed on another server.

If it's a fresh network, for 20-50 people you'll want to install Active Directory and the services you listed. Especially if you adding the other features.

We need more info on the business's current setup and more specific needs before we can help.

this server is to be join with existing server..so you mean the first server only need to install active directory and other services..if that so,i just install all the service that i listed before..
i wonder how this new server will connect to each other..?

if you have other servers, you should have AD alread. Perhaps you should speak to the person who setup the other servers ... last thing you want to do is add a second domain or a rogue dhcp server.

I really think you need to consult someone .. you are not prepared for this. Just because you know how to use windows XP does not mean you should jump right in with 2003 server. Navision is a 30k + software package ... i think you can afford to hire somone to do this correctly.
