tried that and disableing the auto-run feature but they still spin up :o

Disabling Auto-run wont do anything. Have you noticed that when you go to "My Computer" they will also spin up? I dont think there is any software to do this but, maybe. You could just put a toggle switch on the power cable. It would be alot easier if it was a molex powered. Let me know if you find a software solution.

I just found some info on it on a couple different sites but, I dont know if you should take the plungs and do it but, here's the info. One is a program but, only works on NT and 2000 and the other is a reg tweak but, doesnt look promising.

Edit: Check the bottom two links on the page. They might work

If I were you I'd probably mount the drive using those silencer-things/pads or whatever they were called... if you want to save, you can make some yourself. You can make drives go surprisingly quiet if you have them properly held in place...

Try disabling it in device manager, then windows won't even access the device. You want access again, then just re-enable it and voila, you are done.

When did the OP say it still spins up without a disc in it? I've owned dozens of disc drives, many of them Lite-On, and never has one spun with no disc in it.

Every time explorer accesses the device nodes, like the hard dive per se, it will also scan the optical dirves, it does this to find out which exact drive you are talking about. This is all done under the hood, and all you see is dive letters. Sometimes they spin, sometimes they don't and I think a lot of it depends on configurations.
