Windows taking about 3 minutes to load explorer

Hi,

My friend gave me his computer to fix but really stumped on whats going - ran virus scans, malware, spyware, registry cleaner, disk cleanup, disk defrag, msconfig startup programs etc.

Its basically loading up past in the Windows XP load screen in under 30 seconds like a normal computer from boot. but when the windows welcome screen comes up, hangs there for about 25 seconds then disappears and hangs with the desktop wallpaper there for about 3 minutes.

Any ideas whats wrong?

Sounds possibly like a corrupted software driver or a Windows Registry issue. Anyway you can back up all the important data off the hard drive and do a re-installation of Windows?

What all programs you got loading on startup? Could be a program stalling at startup or any of the problems stated above.

See, if same thing happens in Safe Mode.
If Safe Mode is fine, than surely some service, or startup, which is not active in Safe Mode is causing your problem.
