Windows update hanging

Hi there. I (today) reinstalled windows 7 on a computer (home premium), and I got wifi working with a usb wifi receiver I have and the driver for it on a flash drive. After that I went to Windows update and it just said "searching for new updates" for an hour or so. I shut it down a couple of times and restarted it and it hung for a long time doing nothing. Everything else worked just fine, including things using the internet. How can I solve this problem?

You need to just let it sit overnight. Microsoft's servers are crap at distributing updates for 7 for some reason. I work in repair shop and we have to let Windows 7 machines sit overnight to grab updates, they'll sit idle for hours before getting them. Also make sure your power settings aren't set to sleep or turn off after a certain amount of time.
