i see on the cd on newegg the operating system requires a 32 or a 64-bit processor. does it include both operating systems on the disc?

All cpus at this time are 32/64bit. You can run either or even dual boot a 32bit edition along with a 64bit. The disks you see are installation or upgrade disks for one edition of Windows on each. You simply choose the disk by which one you will be running.

Processor
Required: 800 MHz or faster processor
Recommended: 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

That's for the 32bit retail edition seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116473 When it states "64bit capable processor required" then you are dealing with a 64bit edition of Windows. The 32bit editions of any version of Windows will run on a 32/64 cpu as well as 32bit only.

The 64bit edititions are sold separately on their own disks. The only combo packs are those where you see 3 cds or dvds bundled and are usually OEM.

The retail versions on newegg dont actually tell you what bit they are, you have to kinda look around

One look at the retal packaging is all you need there. There'll be one product key for one copy of Windows in each. MS doesn't sell multiple editions packaged in only one box or plastic container(OEM there).

What you will see like taking XP Pro for example will be a second cd there for the additional networking options where a second disk hold those. With Vista now being large enough you now see it on dvds instead.

Newegg however will offer a software bundle like some office product along with an edition you choose at a reduced price now that Vista is seeing it's own drop in prices. The item at the link there is the 32bit edition.

A 64bit will see that specified as 64bit. In fact the only 64bit editions seen at this time are the Business and Home Premium editions in OEM not retail however. You can see 64bit specified in the product heading for Home Premium at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116200

PC eye, I own the retail version of Ultimate, and you get both the 32 bit and 64 bit edition in that package. Yes, it comes in one fancy, plastic box. Don't make me post pics. :P

As a general rule you only get one edition in one package unless buying multipack OEM where you see multiple disks of the same there. When buying the retail version of Ultimate you likely got a promotional bundle at the time since Vista had just come out.

Gee? You have pics of the original retail packaging and disks that came with both disks rather then one for both editions? Same product key or two there?

If you read the label on each disk, it states either 32 or 64 bit.

No, it wasn't a promotion either. If you read the most recent Newegg review (written by a member of CF :D), he states that he received both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions. That's what you get w/ the retail version of Ultimate. ;)

EDIT: Only one product key. :)

And people wondered why the original retail price was $399- for Ultimate. :P

It seems you made out there if you are seeing both on and running. Can't knock that any. This was the first time hearing that both are included since there's nothing in the MS or other product information stating you get two in one.

For the most part people will order or go out and buy an OEM release to save on cost there. The 64bit OEM for Ultimate sold separately catches $179.99. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116493

I simply grabbed an OEM copy while at a pc show rather then going home empty handed at the time since Ultimate was wiped out at every vendor there. The $400 price for retail was a bit elaborate for a single disk being the thought there.

Honestly, when I purchased the OS, I didn't know both versions were included. Like you said, they don't make any mention of this in the Newegg specifications. At the top of the box, in very tiny lettering, it states "32 and and 64-bit." I was pleasently suprised though.

I imagine you were! I remember now someone mentioning seeing a coupon coming in the carton when buying the retail version for the 64bit edition assuming that was simply a promotional tool seen there.

When you mentioned both in one box I thought to myself "come on..." until you posted the two disks side by side since no one else has mentioned actually getting two edtitions together. But now you can easily see why the original price was $399.99! Years back I thought shelling out $180- for 98SE was up there.
