windows vista....can't make it go away!

hello everyone. im new to the forums and of course have a problem i hope you all can help with. i was wanting to see what the new build (5270) of windows vista looked like and got a copy from a friend. well i installed it, got what i came for, and was ready to get rid of it. but i can't figure out how. i have 2 hard drives. a main and a backup that i use just to store some things on. windows xp is on my main. i put vista on the backup. well i couldn't really figure out anything else so i just went into xp and deleted the vista folders on that disk....well tried to anyway. it denied me access to a few of the folders. but i kept getting the boot manager that it was giving me when i had both fully installed. so i ran recovery console and did a FIXMBR, it said that it did it but when i unplugged my backup HD and started the comp, i got the damn boot manager again. any ideas on how i can make this go away? also, any ideas how i can delete those files on my backup drive that it keeps denying me access to? thanks in advance for the help.

well, for the "boot manager" as you put it, im guessing this is the little menu that asks you which OS you want to boot into, to get risd of vistas entry n this menu, you will need to edit your BOOT.INI file, to get to this either just search for it or go to START - CONTROL PANEL - SYSTEM - ADVANCED (tab) - now click SETTINGS button under STARTUP AND RECOVERY - now click EDIT - simply delete the line in the document that opens that corresponds to vista and exit and save. DONE!!!


To delete the folder that you dont have access to, download a small prgram (free) called MoveOnBoot, download - install - and tell it to delete the denied folders on next boot, that should clear them up.....

i appreciate the quick response. i tried that move on boot program after reading that on another thread and it didn't work for me. i told it to delete those folders but when i restarted they were still there.

as for the boot loader, i went to the file you specified and this is what i found.

the only place i see vista there is at the top in the notes. should i delete the boot loader line? thanks.
 
ah damn, should have known better, i dont suppose that BCDEDIT.EXE file was one of the ones that you havent already deleted....?? (on the drive with vista on it) ?? Dont delete anything in that bootloader, its popping up because it see's the remenance of vista on the other drive. for a temporary solution you could of course turn the countdown time down to somethign trivial such as 2 seconds, then it wouldnt seem like it was holding the boot process up that much....

How about a full format of the second drive, that would most certainly get rid of the dying embers of vista thats on there, just make sure you backup your backups, lol

Oh and if anyone else decides to look at this thread they are gonna shout at us, this is against forum rules unless the copy was legally obtained frmo Microsoft under the MSDN group, which i doubt it was.....

ah cool i found a command on some website

C:\Boot\fixntfs -xp

ran that and no more boot loader. still can't delete those extra files but if i can't figure it out yeah i'll just format the drive.

yeah i have a friend thats a developer and he brought over the copy (legally obtained through msdn) so i could see it (was only on my comp for about 20min). so nothing to worry about.

glad to hear you sorted out your bootloader, i was thinking about MoveOnBoot not working then realsied that they were on a diffferent drive, well... duh to me, of course it wouldnt work, was quite silly of me to recommend that to you, nevermind. I shall keep looking for a way to delete the protected files, whats happening is that the remanence of vista OS is holding control of the files, most likely system files. And to stop it protecting them you need to delete them but to delete them you would need to stop it protecting them, its one big vicous circle, lol, nevermind.
