sp1 beta will be private release sadly, it's also covering up the release of xp sp3 which nothing has been released about except that it's in the works

Most people generally go to where? The update link where SP2 is download and install only. Not everyone sifts through the IT pages at MS.
Softpedia has far more then a redistributable service pack. For those that favor FireFox over IE you'll like the article seen there and not at MS going by the title:

Well most people go to micsosoft for windows updates, service packs or not, weather if you download them to install or burn for later. What does Firefox have anything to do with this, you turned off on a off ramp somewhere? Since you have a hard time finding microsoft updates or downloads for XP I will help you out, there 382 pages of them.

I think now but I,m not for sure but you cant even get windows update site to work unless you have SP2 installed, forced feed!

I would wait for the final not beta version before installing any new SP. IE 7 is already on here with the periodic trip to MS to avoid any balloons popping up. I turn off the auto notifier butting in regularly.
