windows vista updates

Hello all,

I just bought a vista computer, Athlon X2@ 2.3 ghz, 2 gb ram, and ATI 1300 pro w/256DDR2, not a crazy machine, but should be decent. When I got the internet set up yesterday, I ran windows update and downloaded 24 updates. All well and good. However, when I restarted my computer, it is running very slow. Also, I ran the task manager while I had one program running (minus AV and everything in the tray), and it says while the program is running I have maybe 2-4 MB (if any) of RAM free out of 2GB. What is causing this? Do I really need more memory already? Or are the updates just killing my resources? Thanks for any input you might have.
