Windows won't start (BSoD)

Hey Everyone,
I was my my dad's computer just recently to check something real fast. I turned it on and then off and then needed something else so I turned it back on. Upon the second try of turning it on the Windows Load screen would come up (Windows XP) then it would flash the Blue screen of eath (hardware failure or some other problem) and the computer would restart.

I am unable to start it in Safe Mode, Last known settings, normally or whatever. THe computer just plain won't start.

What does it sound like is the problem? I'm not sure if he overclocks the CPU, but I don't think that overcocking would show the BSoD. It looks as though the motherboard is fine becaue it's running. Do you think possibly a hard drive failure?

Let me know. Thanks!

Have you actually tried starting it in Safe-Mode by pressing F8 key repeatedly during the startup process?

When you say it "plain won't start" - where exactly does it get hung up. Does it always show the BSOD?

Yes, it could be a hard drive or hardware issue, but it could also be a software glitch or virus issue. In my experience, a hard drive rarely just "dies" like that (although it can happen - other problems occur more often).

Well, I didn't try the F8. But it hands up while the loading screen is occuring. You see the big WIndows XP Logo with the loading bar. After about 3 seconds a blue screen will FLASH and within a second the computer will reboot. It doesn't remain on the blue screen.

See if you can boot into safe mode via F8. That way, you can at least try to check more things and do some general diagnostics. If you can't do it now, just try it later and post your results.

I had the same problem with an pc running xp last week so i put the windows cd in and whent as far as the format drive and in there it said c drive format unknown and the second drive it said was ntfs so i had no choice but to reinstall windows, i dont no what caused it but from what you say the symtems were the same.
