Windows XP – But XP gone out the window

Hi folks

A friend asked me to help out with his problem so I thought I’d post it here. Basically he is running a pretty decent and recent PC, with Windows XP and what have you, however one morning when he switched on the PC he saw that the XP styling for Windows was no more. He then tried to change it in appearance so it didn’t look like Windows Classic, yet the XP styling option had gone.

So I’m just wondering, how would he get his PC back to normal? He has that OEM backup disk thing that you get with new PCs, would this be of help?

Also, does anyone know how this went or why? I know that for a small period of time the other day, maybe five minutes, his PC had no antivirus or firewall. But what purpose does it serve to remove XP styling? And to be honest, I’m more concerned as to what else could have been done without his knowing.

So, if anyone has any recommendations on how-to get XP back to normal and ways to check for open doors or something like that, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

If you right click on the task bar and go to properties you should have 2 tabs Taskbar and Start Menu. Select the start menu tab and you wil have 2 choices with radio buttons. One is classic and the other is Start menu. Select the Start menu option and it should change back to the XP default. If it doesn't then after making selection try a reboot.

Pauly,

I'm afraid that won't help. You can change your Windows XP to have Classic styling yet still have the XP sort of Start Menu. However instead of it being coloured and what have you, it's all grey.

Encore4More,

Everything looks as if he is running Windows 98. However when he goes into Appearance settings to change how it looks, XP Styling isn't an option, whereas normally there is the choice of Classic and Windows XP.

When you you right click on the desktop and select properties and go into the appearance tab you can chose XP style Windows and buttons and still keep the classic style start menu. If you want to return to the original look of XP then you can right click on desktop select properties and go into the themes tab. Pull down the theme drop down menu and choose Windows XP. I hope this helps.

when installing xp, the themes and styles were not transfered or they were corrupted,
