i recently got a dell with windows 7 and i put windows xp on there (preformance edition 32bit) i have 4 gigs of ram if i put windows xp 64 bit will it make a differnence in preformance?

I'd stick with 32bit.
You might find issues with drivers and apps with 64 bit in XP.

Why did you go to XP from W7?

i just like things being faster and they are now. idle on here uses 300 mb of ram
7 uses a gig. every things just faster. way faster exspecially internet browsing.

Hmm, i cannot see how WIndows 7 is going to be significantly slower (or at all) than XP with 4GB of RAM.

XP is done or will be done shortly. No security updates or critical. Is a mistake.
All my Xp 32 bit still shows 3-1/2 gig for mem. I have 7 Pro 64 bit and see's the mem all.
Some programs yes can be a problem. Another hump and mostly fixed with installing in a compatibility mode. Only the oldest programs do not work. My conversation is if you have windows 7 then reinstall.

I agree. I find W7 faster than XP.
But I'm not going to argue with him about it.
I figure that his W7 just needed a good cleaning.
His XP will slow down after a few months unless he keeps the trash thrown out.

i thinks that windows 7 is definitely slower

but its nicer than xp

4 gb RAM, 7 will be about 85% as fast, you won't notice a difference for heavy Internet browsing (flash games, youtube) and will notice a slight difference in heavy programs (if the program is compatible with xp). Keep 7, I ran it with 512 Mb of RAM and it ran fine with basic theme. Keep 7!!!!!

I've actually used Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, I use it on my old PC with an Athlon 64, and I can tell you there is virtually no difference in speed between XP x64 and XP x86. XP x64 runs nicely but finding compatible software and drivers is a right pain, and most of the drivers for newer hardware will not work with XP x64, so I'd go for XP 32-bit. Remember XP x64 Edition is actually based on Windows Server 2003 64-bit, not the 32-bit Windows XP.

I would however recommend Windows 7 any day of the week over Windows XP nowadays because XP is kind of yesterday's new and Microsoft are doing their hardest to phase it out, and Windows 7 is a very good OS. :) Keep Windows 7 and thank us later... ;) Did the Dell come preinstalled with Windows 7 64-bit? If so, I recommend you stick with it.

You'll see have a gig more of memory space. It's not worth the time.
Not even that, more like 512MB or 768MB extra at best. A 32-bit OS will take advantage of 3.25-3.5GB of RAM.

Windows XP and Windows 7 will both run super great on 4 GB of RAM memory if you know how to use them properly.
And it's not true that XP starts running very slow after few months. That will happen ONLY if you do not know how to use it properly.
I have installed Windows XP in 2004. year and it STILL works perfectly.

In short...they are both great.

Cheers ladies!

I don't think XP 64bits is good choice, there are few software support it well and the vital problem is less driver support it too, you will crash on tons of compatible problem. But support large memory is top priority for you that XP 64 is better than XP 32 otherwise XP 32 is better always

64-bit is perfectly fine. Driver support was only an issue back when 64-bit first came around.

No after having used XP x64 I can conclude that driver support for the 64-bit XP is still pretty bad. Driver support for 64-bit Vista and 7 is fine, but 64-bit XP, no no. As it's based on Windows Server 2003 x64, you can't use the Vista 64-bit drivers and any software which requires at least Windows XP SP3 to run, so pretty much any software made in the past two or so years, usually won't run on XP x64. This is because XP x64 is only 'updateable' to SP2, there is no SP3 for XP x64, as remember, it's really Windows Server 2003 x64. There are some exceptions, but things like Office 2010 won't work on XP x64, and I couldn't get Sony Vegas Movie Studio 10 to work either. I did however get Photoshop CS5 Extended (64-bit) to work, but Adobe don't support it on XP x64 if I remember correctly.

Finding drivers for older hardware which will work on XP x64 is usually easier than finding drivers for newer hardware which will on XP x64. You can probably get most drivers for internal hardware to work, such as graphics drivers (I know NVIDIA support XP x64, not sure about AMD) and probably stuff like LAN and audio drivers, but it's drivers for things like webcams and printers and various other bits of external hardware you may want to use where XP x64 becomes annoying.

I'd advise staying away from XP x64. :/

This thread should be locked anyway, since OP is using a pirated edition of XP.
