Windows xp (32-bit) to Windows 7 professional OEM (32-bit), having trouble

A friend wants me to put windows 7 on his xp pc. He got the OEM windows 7 professional disc, but when i insert the disc the pc does not recognize it and i also tried starting it through the bios and no luck. Any clues?
 
Does the cd drive read other disks? Is the drive an actual DVD drive? If not it won't read DVD install disk.
 
On the drive itself it says it is a cd/dvd drive. I put a cd in and it worked, then I tried a dvd movie and it did not work. Does that mean the drive itself has something wrong with it?
