windows xp cd key

Yes, you should still be able to format the hard drive but you wont be able to install the OS, that would be illegal...

no its not, as long as he uses his cousins cd key then its fine

as long as an individual cd key is being used there are no legal problems... each cd key represents an individual licence

i'm not sure, i remember that older versions of windows that were supplied by oems had a cd key that was in a different format; i dunno if that still holds true but it will make a difference if that is the case

ok and he has a compaq with 1 harddrive except it appears as 2 hard dirves (\:c and \:d) in the My computer folder. the c is all his stuff an the d is system restore. can i right click the c drive and hit format and bring it back to the factory settings and make it so its like when he first brought it home?

no, because your computer is using those files. If he doesnt have his restore cd and uses an original windows xp cd, then when you put the cd in and boot up, you can delete both partitions, then create 1 with the space.

ok so i am going to format it i just want want to be sure that it doesnt matter that it is a oem copy of windows that he has

he has 1 hard drive partitioned into 2 logical drives, but you say that you have two hard drives that you want to combine into 1 logical drive, you probably can do that, although I've never heard of it being done. you might want to look into it, you would do it with a partitioning program like norton partition magic.
