Why should I upgrade windows XP? Instead of just turning off the updater after installation. ( Which is what I currently do)

I mean whats the point? I don't ever update it and nothing happens to my system. I have norton system works 2005 and Spysweeper protection my system. Why should i update windows?

Also whats the deal with the service packs. 1 & 2... Do I need those? Why?

If so, where do I get them?

Your question is a bit confusing, if you have a windows 9x OS, then i would suggest upgrading to Windows XP.

And getting updates for XP fixes holes in windows, which makes it more secure.

like geoff said, they are mostly to patch security issues, but on occasion will make windows run better/faster. If you have a legitimate copy of Windows, you might as well update. For those who don't have legit copies (not going to mention my name) updates can actually screw your system up. You get the service packs and the other updates from microsoft.com, but the easiest way to get there is to click start, all programs, windows update, and it should tak eyou right where you need to go. If you haven't installed SP1 yet as it sounds, you might be spending a lot of time downloading updates and installig them.

if you absolutely dont use your pc for internet, then you dont really have to update to SP2. SP1, its up to you. however, like u said, if you do nothing to the PC, then like u said also, theres no point.

however, even if you use it for occsional browsing or anything like that, its best to have it updated

Microsoft has stopped providing support for XP without Service Pack 1. So if you do run into a problem down the line, they will want you to at least install SP1 before they will talk to you.

As geoff said, the service packs and most hotfixes address security issues that have been discovered relating to XP. Some of these are critical vulnerabilities that no amount of AV or malware detectors are going to stop (or even detect).

Service Pack 2 also includes a software firewall to protect your computer from outside attack. If you have a computer with "always on" internet access (in other words, you have cable, DSL, something other than dialup), then you definitely want to have some sort of firewall between you and the 'net. Windows firewall is better than nothing.

You can get the service packs at Microsoft's support site. I recommend you don't get them anywhere else.

Thanks for all your input peoples. I use my computer for gaming, browsing, and school. Right, we won't asign any name to whom doesn't have a legitament copy of windows. =]

I was just curious to why I should install these updates. The main reason being that it is really annoying to see all the hotfixes listed in the add\remove programs list. I hate that. Is there any way to keep them out of that list. I would bet there isnt an easy solution to that. Get back to me...

Quick quiestion: When updating windows using the windows automatic updater, it will download and instal BOTH serives packs along with all the hotfixes?

I have done this before, while ago and I couldn't seem to get SP2 downloaded, let alone installed. I had all the hotfixes installed with SP1 too.

Uncheck "show updates" at the top of your add/remove programs list

Of course it is always changing but last I heard it was this year. Sometime in December/06 I think.

Slipstream the Service Packs and hotfixes and reinstall...

This is the best way I could think of. I did this with my copy of Windows XP Pro with SP2. Saves tones of time with future installs.

lol thanks everyone for you help. I think I'm going to get a hold of XP pro with service pack 2 and use nlight. Wish me luck.
