Windows XP HP PC Recovery

Hi i have a question I am doing a HP PC Recovery (on my HP deskopt) (not using the HP PC Recovery CD's) im just doing it straight from my hard-drive. Will it destroy all of my personal files or does it just replace the windows xp system files?
 
ok so whats going on I just did a HP recovery and now when it asks me for "select your country" I hit united states, and hit next and the computer freezes...

im stuck. please help..
