Hey guys, my bro is trying to install windows on his computer and he keeps getting an error:

"An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing.

One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

Data Error (cyclic redundancy check).

If you are installing from a Cd, there might be a problem with the disc; try cleaning the disc or using another disc."

Then it says something about installing from the network, but were not, and the cd is fine. It also has an OK button which brings you to a different page with the same error message, and then restarts the computer and repeats. I'm trying to help him out, but I don't have any idea about this. If anyone could help that would be awesome! Thanks

The CRC uses a mathematical formula to verify data copied to the hard drive. This is one tool included on the installation disk "unfortunately". It's not the most reliable for many reasons. Apparently something wasn't copied fully to the drive to being seeing that. Is this message being seen after the "press enter now to install Windows or press R to repair an existing installation" screen comes up?

During the first screen to follow the option to delete the current partition is done by pressing the L key followed by the D key on the next screen. You will then be prompted to answer yes or no to confirm that. This would be a fast way to see a new partition created for installing Windows onto "IF" there was nothing on the drive to begin with. Is this on a new build or an effort to upgrade to XP?

If it keeps doing it, its probably a bad CD or your CD-rom is acting up, try cleaning the cd if not that try another CD drive

Pc eye, thanks for your advice. His computer actually has been running windows x64 for a while, but he wants to go back to 32 bit so hes trying to get that going. Ill check out the cd drive, however the cd is good. And the error prompts after its formatted the hard drive, and moves into the "installing windows" step. Any more advice would be appreciated. Thanks

also, is it possible to install it over the network? That seems like it might be easier, but I dont know. Thanks

I don't think you could do more then ghost a drive over a network. You would have to remotely boot the system and remove the current partition with the installer if it will work with the 32bit version's installer. Now that you have added the fact that XP 64bit was the current version of Windows running that explains the error messages seen!

If you are unable to remove the current installation with the 32bit cd there are some alternatives for wiping drives and removing stubborn partitions. If the installation disk for the 64bit version was available you could delete the primary with the installer. But the problems mainly seen with the 32bit installer is the newer release of the XP 64bit version installed as well as being 64 not 32bit.

Either by floppy or cd-r you can create a boot disk for either deleting the current partition or even zero filling the drive. Zero filling even with the tools provided by drive manufacturers and maybe with Active Killdisk are time consuming rather then time saving. This is one reason why the Gnome Partition Editor makes life a little easier. The free partitioning tool for both Linux and Windows will even remove Vista. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828
