k, i know its possible but ive never done it.. on my laptop i lost the interchangeable cd drive, so i only have floppy well my xp pro is obviously a cd, how can i go about installing this on my laptop, ive heard of maybe a network install or something but im not sure.. ne help, or can i put xp on a flash drive and install it off that plz let me know i need to have this done soon

The only way we can discuss installing here is simply replacing the optical drive. The option of using six 3 1/2" floppies is for starting the installer when you can't boot from the optical drive. The MS page for creating the disk set and link for download is seen at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310994

how can we not talk about doin a network installation or takin the files from my legit cd and makin a flashdrive boot it, and no i have access to a external cd drive

This is why you need to either replace the original drive or go for an external model that will work through a usb port.

what i meant by not havin a usb drive is havin an external cd rom.. i have a 2gb flash drive that if possible i could use to transfer the windows files over and make bootable off of that

It's possible, but I'm not certain if that would be legal since you're technically making a copy of the disc. Not sure if that would fall into the same general category as slipstreaming or not.

You want the installation to come right from the original cd by way of an external optical if necessary since everything including product id is there. This is how MS intended the installer to work. The MS update also has to verify the installation in order to see all the updates go on by first downloading and installing a verification tool.

The only thing you can do with the flash drive there would be to use that as the alternative to preparing a boot floppy or set of 6 in order to get the installation going for you by first booting from that in order to load some generic usb drivers. You would then have to change to the usb feed optical drive in order to manually start the installer.

im only a newbie so please dont flame me if im wrong, but as a post above said about making a copy, i do believe that you can make a backup copy of your disk, so you can use the backup and store the origional to protect it from scratches etc

i know its legal, and it wouldnt change ne of the files to move them to a flash drive at all.. wouldnt change the product id or nothing.. as long as i use my legit serial that came with the xp pro oem cd

Yes, "illegal downloading and duplication of software is prohibited", but according to the Microsoft EULA, making a copy of an OS you purchased for your use is legal.

Per the EULA: "* Back-up Copy. IF MANUFACTURER HAS NOT
INCLUDED A BACK-UP COPY OF THE
SOFTWARE WITH THE COMPUTER ON
PHYSICAL MEDIA (e.g. CD OR
PARTITIONED HARD DRIVE), YOU MAY
MAKE A SINGLE BACK-UP COPY OF THE
SOFTWARE. You may use the back-up copy solely for your
archival purposes and to reinstall the SOFTWARE on the
COMPUTER. Except as expressly provided in this EULA
or by local law, you may not otherwise make copies of
the SOFTWARE, including the printed materials
accompanying the SOFTWARE. You may not loan, rent,
lease, lend or otherwise transfer the CD or back-up copy
to another user."

Software companies already know people make backup copies for personal use. But that isn't a topic for discussion here.

well i guess i didnt realize that it was against the rules.. so ive got this usb thing that is like an external ide cable thing allows u took hook stuff umm could i hook a cd rom to it and boot from it u think

With the exception of flash drives you generally can't boot from usb devices. You first have to see usb drivers loaded in order to access any drive or device plugged in there. Besides you are still going to want to get the internal drive replaced considering the drivers/software you will need installed after Windows goes on.

well all the drivers are downloadable from the internet.. but i see what u are talkin about pc, but have u seen how much a drive is now and days lol

Laptops/notebooks alike always see higher prices on replacement parts since those are generally prebuilt while parts for desktops are often used in custom builds. If you want something that does alot in a small portable unit you simply have to pay the extra for the convenience. That's just the way things are.
